Sega President to be, Hisao Oguchi, has confirmed that Sega is in talks with EA regarding a partnership that will help bolster Sega's North American sales, while helping EA's Japanese sales grow.
EA had been mentioned numerous times in the past as Sega looked for a partner to merge with. Many speculated that besides the failed merger with Namco and Sammy, EA was also being considered. Today's news is not quite a merger or an acquisition, but more of a partnership in sales, which makes more sense for EA, and could help Sega a great deal.
The deal being discussed with Sega is similar to what EA has done with Square in the past, in which the two companies had a sales alliance in Japan and North America. The Square and EA partnership became nullified when Square merged with Enix.
A sales alliance would help Sega aggressively achieve a better market in North America while allowing EA to become more aggressive in Japan. Currently the only "downside" to the partnership may be Sega's 2K sports series that directly competes with EA's sport lineups. Sega may very well have to stop producing these titles in order to benefit from EA's name and market.
