Even More DragonBall Kai Details!
Well, I guess this is what I get for not getting on a computer until noon. Earlier this morning, tons of new information surfaced about the upcoming DragonBall Kai. If you've already read this on Daizenshuu EX, where it was originally posted, then this will mostly be a repeat. We have a beautiful V-Jump scan from kei17 which highlights four major points that make up the world of "Kai":

The story will be developed speedily!
"Kai" starts from the invasion of the Saiya-jin. This version will be re-edited to follow more closely to Akira Toriyama's original story, so the story's development will progress all the faster!
The opening and ending songs will be completely renewed!!
The opening and ending songs will both be made anew! Furthermore, in "Kai", the background music will be newly recorded. Let's enjoy "Kai", where even the music has been powered up!!
Through digital processing, the image will be made vibrant!!
All the grime, damage and noise remaining on the "Z" film will be removed! In HD, the image will be even clearer. We've carefully made the ultra-powerful "Kai" world even more impressive!
An all-star voice cast will record the lines anew!!
The original main cast, centered around Nozawa Masako as Son Goku, will reunite. They'll breathe life into the characters again, to support their appeal!!

Basically, we got some answers, but are still left with just as many questions. I'll admit, they're doing a really good job of peaking everyone's interest for the broadcast in April by leaking a little information every week instead of completely spelling everything out for us. The people at Toei are still advertising geniuses!

One thing you can take from the scan is that we basically have confirmation that they'll be cutting down filler material. We also now know they'll be "renewing" the music, but nothing has been mentioned so far about Kikuchi Shunsuke. So we're not exactly sure if they're re-recording the original music or creating completely new compositions. My vote is for first option. As far as the new opening and ending are concerned, we still don't know if they'll be doing multiple animations or what theme they'll be using. I just hope that Kageyama Hironobu is involved in same way, like singing the new theme, it that's the route they go. But with all these questions still looming about DragonBall Kai, I'm sure we'll be getting more information from Toei before April 5th.

We also have some more information from our inside-man Wasted Wisher:

Don't know anything about the intro and ending song yet, or anything past episode 1.

All of the scenes that were being worked on so far are not being cropped... in fact, quite the reverse, they're being extended. The old format of the original footage is too small to fit the standard frame sizes used for anime nowadays. So all the artwork has to be extended outwards to fit the new frame sizes; this includes both the animation itself and the background art.
I hope this is true (from his track record I have not doubt it is), because there has been a lot of debate about the extent of the cropping or re-framing since the most recent Jump scan appeared. Maybe some people will calm down a little bit, well at least until April 5th, when all of our questions will be answered.

In our final bit of news, it appears that the Jump Anime Tour special, "Heya! Son Goku and Friends Return!!", will be getting a manga adaptation in the March 21st issue of V-Jump. This adaptation, while based on Toriyama's story, will be drawn by Ooishi Naho. A big thanks to kei17 for the V-Jump scan.

HD Remastered DBZ to Air in Japan!
Remember that new DragonBall Jump Anime Tour special or the upcoming live-action movie? Well that's all old news now! It appears that Toei is going to one-up FUNimation, as they'll be remastering the DragonBall Z series for an HD presentation... in widescreen! The best part of this new remastering by Toei; NO cropping. They'll actually be extending the frames so no cropping will occur and so I can drool at it in HD. It looks like I'll finally have to invest in a Blu-ray player.

This story was first reported over on Daizenshuu EX by our ally in DB-goodness, VegettoEX, with a "little" help from kei17 and Wasted Wisher. I can't even begin to express what this news means to me, so to quote VegettoEX, "...this is perhaps the biggest news to hit since DragonBall GT ended in Japan back in 1997!" Here's his breakdown of what we'll be seeing, as originally translated by kei17:

The DBZ TV series is receiving an extensive "refresh" for Japanese television airing
This is in celebration of DragonBall Z's 20th anniversary
While based on the original animation production, it is being updated with new technology
This includes extending the frames for formatting on an HD 16:9 display (note: no cropping)
The original Japanese cast is re-grouping to re-voice the show (where available, and unfortunately not including those that have passed on)
Sound effects are being updated
Unlike the general show, the OPs and EDs are being completely redone
While not in the above announcement, other reports are noting that the number of episodes is being reduced from 291 to approximately 100
This begins Sunday, April 5, 2009 at 9:00 am
Be sure to check out the Daizenshuu EX podcast this Sunday, which will be fully dedicated to this mind-blowing news! In the meantime, you can check out the corresponding thread on the Daizenshuu EX Forums. As always, we'll keep you posted as more information surfaces.
Toei Drops "GeGeGe no Kitaro"
In my post last night, I stated that DragonBall Z ("refreshed") would be taking over GeGeGe no Kitaro's Sunday morning time-slot on Fuji TV. This statement was based simply on me putting two and two together. Well not 5 hours later, and animeanime.jp had reported that Toei will in fact be dropping GeGeGe no Kitaro (which is actually the fifth television series by the same name) in order to make room for the upcoming premiere of DragonBall Z on April 5th. This basically confirms the fact that DragonBall Z will be airing every week, as most of us had predicted. I'm hoping we'll get some answers to the rest of our questions sometime soon.
More DBZ "Refresh" Confirmation!
Now that Weekly Shounen Jump Issue #11 has finally made the rounds in Japan since it first appeared on Friday, photos are starting to pop up on more and more sites across the interwebz. I know we already posted a photo from Jump taken by kei17, but here's one that was posted up on Gigazine. Note that some of the smaller text is a bit more legible, but it unfortunately doesn't give us any new information.

Finally, for those of you still doubting the validity of this mind-blowing news, prepare to be convinced. Toei Animation's Official DragonBall Z website has posted a statement confirming the "revival" of the DragonBall Z TV series.

"DragonBall Z" TV Anime Revival!

20th anniversary of "DragonBall Z"! The legend of Z returns with the newest digital technology!!
Broadcasting will begin Sunday, April 5, 2009, at 9:00 am, on Fuji TV!
More information will be posted at a later date!
Nothing we don't already know, but at least it confirms we'll be getting some more information at some point, though it doesn't confirm exactly when that'll be. The sooner the better, I say. Incidentally, if you haven't already visited the link below, Toei has revamped both of the DragonBall and DragonBall Z official websites. Spiffy!
DragonBall "Kai"?!
Well, it appears that the new "refreshed" version of DragonBall Z will actually be getting it's very own title, DragonBall Kai. They'll be dropping the "Z" and replacing it with "Kai," based on the kanji 改, meaning "renewed" or "revised." This actually caught me off-guard, as I assumed they'd continue just calling it DragonBall Z. At lease now we can refer to it with an actual title instead of just adding "refreshed." Anyway, the new title was confirmed in this next weeks issue of Weekly Shounen Jump, as shown in the image below.

I'm not exactly sure who to credit with the photo, since it started floating around this afternoon and is on numerous Japanese websites and blogs. So, I will credit the interwebz... and goty of the Arlong Park forums, where I originally found the photo.

I do like the new logo. It at least looks like they put a little more effort into it than the one they used in the Jump Anime Tour special, which is nice to see. With all this news coming out every week, maybe we'll get some actual screen shots? Huh, Toei, what do ya say? Well, hopefully by now you've memorized the date, but if not, here's your reminder... Sunday, April 5, 2009, at 9:00 am, on Fuji TV!

DragonBall Kai Details
After leaking the Jump Anime Tour Special character sheets and breaking the news of a DragonBall Z "refresh," I think we can trust our inside man Wasted Wisher. Since the announcement of the "refresh," there has been some speculation as to what exactly DragonBall Kai will be like. So, here are a few things Wasted Wisher has told us will be in the upcoming first episode:

A brief look at the last moments of Bardock and Planet Vegeta.
An overview of DragonBall, from Goku's younger years up until his triumph over Piccolo at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai.
The all-too-brief and yet still somewhat triumphant return of "FARMER WITH A SHOTGUN!"
Goku's winky has disappeared! That's right, no more Goku frontal nudity. But don't worry, they won't do anything so blatant as to digitize tighty-whiteys on him.

Hopefully some more details will surface as we get closer to April 5th, but at least now we have a little better idea of what's coming our way.
Bello!Bello!Bello!
